Brockwell Incorporated offers beautiful base moldings & plinths in (3) Orders of Architecture: Tuscan, Roman Doric and Ionic, or commonly referred to as the "Attic" base.
We can make column bases in a variety of materials and specialize, especially, in wood & fiberglass composite materials. For decorative applications, we offer bases that wrap around the column shaft and for load-bearing applications, we offer bases that sit underneath the column shaft.
Typically, with older, EXTERIOR wooden columns, the first element to deteriorate is the column base. This is due to inadequate cylindrical air flow up & down the column shaft. The column essentially "sweats," causing build-up of moisture at the column base, which leads to inevitable rot. Also, not having proper ventilation for EXTERIOR wood columns causes the wood to constantly expand and contract; so, over time, this continuous back-and-forth can lead to splits in the shaft. Before purchasing a complete column, first check to see if the column shaft and the capital really need to be replaced. If they don't need to be replaced, then this saves you some money.
Brockwell also can provide you with individual base components, such as: just the base molding (rounded portion), and we have the ability to reduce your plinth's (square portion) height if necessary for a slight upcharge.
We have the capability to create Custom Base Moldings / Plinths according to your exact specifications. Please get in touch with a Brockwell Incorporated Sales Associate to discuss. *Please Note: Creating a base in our fiberglass composite material to match your specifications requires a new mold to be made. This will increase the overall cost & lead time.
